Based on a true story about one of the “Hidden Children “ – a young Jewish girl found in darkness after the Holocaust in 1947 It is relevant in today’s anti-refugees & ant-semitism.

“A heart-wrenching opera tackling life after the Holocaust.” -Theater is Easy (2017)

A Note from the Composer, Mira J. Spektor who just celebrated her 89th Birthday:

“I was luckier than Lena, the girl hidden in the dark castle basement  for four years…or the young people who cannot enter or stay in the US today…Born in 1928, in Berlin of Lithuanian parents who had escaped the Pogroms, we left Berlin just before Kristallnacht. We lived, and I went to school, in Paris until the summer of 1939 when we came through Switzerland, Italy & Portugal to the US in 1940 – on the SS Washington…a voyage that included a night in lifeboats hanging over the ocean, while threatened by a German U Boat…

Lady of the Castle was commissioned & premiered at Theater for the New City in 1980 but is very relevant in today’s climate of anti-refugees & anti-semitism.  After its opening, Moriah Blum, the wife of the then Israeli Ambassador to the UN Yehuda Z. Blum, said that she knew the girl who became a woman & lived down the street from her in Jerusalem!! This chamber opera was also heard in the US in NYC, Long Island, Florida, Massachusetts, and in Europe in Berlin & London, as well as on TV in NYC and Washington DC.  Recorded on Original Cast Records.

I wrote & sang in my first musical in my senior year of high school…Graduated Sarah Lawrence College, & then studied a Mannes School of Music & Juilliard… I sang in many Off Broadway Operas & on LPs & CDs in both the US & Europe…I created & sang with the Atlantic Opera Singers who, for 10 years, brought Educational Opera Programs into NY State Schools …I was married for 48 years to Eryk Spektor – who, until his death in 1998, created & was head of the Jabotinsky Foundation in the US…I also sang in the only Recital held in the Residence of Prime Minister Menachem Begin in Jerusalem.

I have 2 Children, 2 Grandchildren , 2 Grandchildren-in-law & a 4 year old Great-Grandson!”
